The Aka are called by the Thai "Ei-Ko" [called by themselves Aka] are the poorest ethnic group in Thailand and are well known to tourists for their extraordinary costumes and exotic appearance.

The Khmer are the people who built the powerful Khmer Kingdom in Cambodia in 800 AD. to last for over 600 years.

The Karen, or Yang, (called Kaliang or Yang in Thai), belong to the Sino-Tibetan linguistic family.

The Mon (also sometimes called Talaing) people have for centuries lived in the area of present-day Thailand and Burma (Myanmar).

There are about 30,000 Lisu People in Thailand. The Lisu belong to the Tibeto - Burman branch of the Sino - Tibetan linguistic family.

Called Musur in Thailand, the Lahu originated in Tibet and southwest China and migrated to Thailand, through northern Burma, as well as to Laos and Burma and Viet-Nam.

The Palong call themselves "Ta Ang". They belong to the Mon - Khmer branch of the Austro-Asiatic linguistic family.

The Lawa or Lua as the northern Thai call them, are found only in Thailand. The history of the Lawa people is long and poorly understood.

Some call them Htin and some call them Lua. They wear no colourful costume, that may be the reason why they are not on postcards like other hilltribes.

The Yao call themselves Mien. They are linguistically grouped together with the Meo tribe in the Meo -Yao branch of the Austro - Thai family.

The Tai had always preferred a mid-level mountain region that was suited to their traditional array of crops.

The Thai call them "Pi Tong Luang" or The Spirit of the yellow leaves. The are known also by the names "Yumbri" and "Ma Ku". There are about 100 only of them.

The Kamu are one of the small tribal groups, living along the Thai-Laotian border of Nan province. At the present there are about 10000 people of this tribe.

The Hmong, known in Thailand as Meo [Which is no a nice word], are found in many countries in Sout-East Asia such as Laos, Yunnan and Viet-Nam. The Hmong belongs to the Meo - Yao branch of the Austro - Thai linguistic family.
